Let's talk about giving: Today we are here to seek help in helping others. We need help in our work as part of a “Paying it Forward" campaign.

Announcing our NICU Angel Gown CREATION sewing bee!

If you didn't know before now: I have a special place in my heart for women and children, especially infants. Now you know!! Through the years it's been my mission to help them in the good times and the bad.

Giving Back

We have been accepting gown donations to benefit NICU Angel Babies program.  The donated gowns are up purposed to use for burial gowns for Angels called home soon after birth.  It's a loss that I can not imagine bearing as a mother.  My heart goes out to the families.

Through this we hope to lift them up a tiny bit, helping them find hope in the future.  Working with the public for 49 years it's been something that I have seen as people are devastated by this loss.  Watching how different people deal differently with their recovery is enlightening.

Now I am in my twilight years of working with brides.  We have been blessed with an area big enough to store these donation gowns.  When I try to do this by myself I end in a puddle of tears mourning for the loss of the unknown children and their parents pain.  To offset that I am inviting others to share in the giving of time to uplift the community in this small way.

So if you know a seamstress, of any caliber, please share this!  Please get the word out.  It's the plan to have an evening of laughter as we sew with love for little Angels.  So beginner or advanced, come one, come all, let's share our love for sewing in a gift of love for others.

When:  The last Monday of each month.
What:  We will supply the materials, you bring your tools.
Where:  Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom's upper room

 Setting Wedding Ground Rules

A smooth planning journey begins with each bride and groom taking some time alone to envision their perfect day.  I encourage the brides to envision the wedding day atmosphere and what type of celebration suits the couple's style.  The most important question they need to answer is:  What feeling do I want my guests to have through out this celebratory day.  What memories and emotions do you want your guests to take with them?  The answers to these questions will lead you in forming every decision you make.  There are many, many "I Do's" and I don'ts along the way.  Keeping it all straight can seem overwhelming.  Here are a few tips that I feel are most important to consider in your planning:

I DOS
______________________________________________________

  • Do make sure that both of your personalities are infused into every element of your big day.  This event should be exclusively and uniquely yours.  Quirky favors, place cards, unique foods, personalized cocktails and favorite foods are great ways to add that personalized touch.
  • Do be upfront with all of your vendors about specific things you do and do not want to see or happen at your wedding.  For example:  If you have songs you want played at your wedding it's a good idea to plan the music for your big day.
  • Do make sure that your photographer has a "MUST TAKE" list of photos you want to treasure for your ever after.
  • Do choose hair and makeup styles that are not too far from your normal, every day look.  Of course it should be and upgraded and glamorous look compared to every day.
  • Do choose classic styling over Avant guard styling.  The last thing you want is to look back at your wedding pictures in 10-20 years and wonder "What was I thinking!"
  • Do purchase a comfortable pair of shoes that you can wear all day.  Many brides think to purchase a glamorous pair for the wedding and a practical pair for the reception.  The problem with this thought process is that it creates a hemming dilemma:  do we want our gown hemmed for the wedding or do we want it hemmed for the busier, more movement filled reception?  (I always suggest going with the shorter length:  a too long gown is a trip hazard.)
  • Do practice walking and dancing in your shoes!  It's important to wear your shoes for at least one hour standing.  It takes a bit to determine if they are truly comfortable and if they will give you blisters.  Ill fit shoes can really detract from your enjoyment.
  • Do take a deep breath before you walk down the aisle and tell yourself:  I am going to have a wonderful time no matter what happens, I've worked hard for it, I've earned it and I deserve it.  Nothing will take this from me!  Then smile and keep your focus on the important matters of the day.

I Don'ts
_______________________________________________________
  • Don't forget to eat throughout the day.  It's a busy day and will pass in a flash!  It's important that you eat lest you find yourself faint at the alter or tipsy after one cocktail .  I recommend a fruit and cheese tray with clear beverages for you and your maids while you are getting ready.
  • Don't feel like you have to have either a traditional wedding or go with what ever current trends are.  If you are not a traditional girl then you probably wouldn't envision a traditional wedding.  Personalize it!  It's your day and you should have it your way!
  • Don't spend more than a few minutes of your big day on social media!  While you have been waiting what seems a long time to change your relationship status:  save it for the next day!  Turn off your phone and stay present in the moment!  The moments will fly and you want to cherish each one with the people who have taken the time to come and celebrate with you.
  • Don't be afraid to suggest time limits for toasts.  Five minutes is a standard rule of thumb.  Your guests will appreciate it and it will keep your reception feeling more like a party and less like a presentation.
  • Don't fret over the little things that might go wrong, be prepared for them.  There is no such thing as a perfect wedding and something is bound to go amiss.  Whatever it is, while it may seem traumatic at the moment it's my experience that those are the humerous and memorable moments in a wedding later.

You may want to prepare you own Do and Don't list to keep you focused.  Once you are engaged you will be more observant of other weddings and details, this allows you to reflect and vision your own perfect day.

My experience over the years has been that brides
  • with a year to plan their wedding, taking 3-4 decisive weeks in the beginning, 2 weeks of checking and confirming at 6 months and finalizing everything for the last three weeks are the best laid plans.
  • with two years to eighteen months to plan thinking they will do a little every day til the wedding are exhausted by the experience.  They grow weary of the process as does everyone else around them and can't wait for it to be over.
  • with less than six months has a general feeling of stress due to time limitations and time frames it takes to accomplish the many aspects of that perfect day.  I'm not saying it can't be done in a short period of time, but it generally is stress inducing for all involved.

Shopping for your dream dress during the Corona Virus

We are healthy and still opened,
as always:  by appointment only.

Dream Dress Shopping During The Corona Virus

Some helpful tips to keep you safe while you search for your dream dress:
With information gathered from OSHA and the CDC along with our suppliers we are sharing to help you make the most of your shopping experience.

Be thoughtful of your health and the health of others.

Make sure you are vigilant on your symptoms and do not hesitate to reschedule if necessary.  Definitely reschedule under any of the following circumstances:
  1. You are not feeling well.
  2. You feel achy.
  3. You are coughing
  4. You are sneezing.
  5. You have diarrhea.
  6. You have any ill stomach feelings.
You have a fever over 100°

Ask Your Guests to Make Sure They Are Not Sick!

Your appointment will last from 1 to 1.5 hours.  We will all be cozy and in a closely confined area.  Do make sure that those who will be accompanying you are also feeling well and have no symptoms.  We can face time or video chat with people who are unable to be there.

What To Expect

Do not bring children.  During this high risk period we must strictly enforce a no child under 12 policy at the advise of CDC guidelines.
Guests are limited to 4 per party.  No exceptions, please don't ask.
Sanitize  your hands!
If you arrive early you will need to wait while we clean between appointments.

What To Wear For Your Appointment

We have always recommended that you 'dress appropriately' ie: cover that which should remain unseen.  In order to comply with CDC Health recommendations:  Full coverage underwear are manditory to try on dresses at this time.  For further explanation please see this.

Anticipated Impact on Deliveries

Brides & formal wear clients are deeply concerned about experiencing delivery issues in regards to their special ordered merchandise.  At this time, some factories in the Far East are closed.  Others are running at less than full capacity.  Others unaffected.  So there is  no blanket answer.  Furthermore, as the virus spreads internationally: it's impact will be felt globally.  At Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom we are making all of our inventory available to service as many as possible in this time of need.  With over 400 designers on our rack we also carry dresses made in Europe and India.  This is minimizing delivery issues.  We strongly encourage everyone to buy off the rack to protect themselves.

Special Order Or Off The Rack?

Standard delivery in normal circumstances is 4-6 months.  If your event is less than 9 months away:  purchasing off the rack is our most sage advice.  You can save yourself potential risks and headaches that are anticipated in manufacturing in areas deeply affected by the Corona Virus.

We have not
recommended the standard 6 month delivery in over 20 years!  Why?  In the end of the 90's there was a UPS strike and this caused many very serious delays and much stress to our clients.  And on it's heels was an embargo that stopped imports from entering the country.  This added more stress on the situation.  So at that time we shifted and have strongly recommended all special orders be placed Nine full months before the date of need.

My Dress is 'In Production' and the original date is timely.  Should I rely on that date?

Please know that an in production date is only an estimated date and has never been the guaranteed date for shipment.  At this time:  production dates are subject to change without notice.  For instance, if your wedding is only four months away and estimated delivery is 3 months:  it's advised you buy off the rack as many factories are not running at 100% production.  We have plenty to choose from!

Delays could be as long as three months.  If you are ordering please make sure you have allowed enough time for delays in production and or shipping. And don't forget to add on time for alterations!  Otherwise, please be safe and buy off the rack.

Please remember:  these are real supply chain issues and are not limited to the bridal industry.  All businesses are facing this at the same time.  As of now we do not foresee any inconvenience to our customers due to our outstanding relations with our vendors and factories.  We will keep you updated.

Why the cost of Wedding gowns & formal wear?

What's in a gown?  What causes the prices to seem so expensive?  Have you ever contemplated what must happen before a gown is ready for you to ever try on?  Check out this very brief sneak peek inside a factory and what it entails:

There can be, literally, hundreds of hours of hand labor that creates these works of art.  Did you know that our product has been defined, legally, as works of art?  That many designers spend hundreds of hours creating every aspect of a single gown?  Have you ever considered or weighed the costs?  From the thread to make the fabric to the very specific beading details that determine that it is a work of art or a mass factory production.

Having devoted my entire life to this industry and making the dreams of girls and women come true.  This gives me a unique perspective on our industry and our product.  Is it wrong that I, on occasion, feel offended when women are disgusted by the costs of the gowns?  Working to educate and explaining that a hand crafted bridesmaid dress will take approximately 10 hours from the cutting to walking out the door.   Making hundreds of them, over the decades, has taught me much.  Then one must consider the cost of the materials.  Having made well over a thousand gowns in my life time I feel qualified to say that the ready to wear products in our industry are incredibly affordable when considering materials and labor values.  There have been gowns that the lace alone cost $500 per yard.  Keep in mind that the average brides maid gown will take 5 yards and the average bridal gown will take 10.  Plus interfacing, plus lining, plus boning, plus thread and other detail elements.  For many years I was in awe of how affordably these gowns had been produced.

There seems to be little awareness of what it takes to make these dreams come true.  As if we have mice in the back rooms with needles and thread stitching things up.  But no, there is no magic wand & there are no little mice or elves that work by our sides.  Most of the people that I know, in this industry, work a long amount of hours, some on little to no pay to make your dreams come true.

Today my goal is to create awareness.   Awareness of the consumers effects on others.  I'm certain it's totally unbeknown nor even considered by the majority.  Did you know that the majority of our products use to be made here in the USA in factories located here.  Now, there still are some.  But over time, in a quest to keep the costs affordable, production has been moved from the United States.  And the majority, for decades, has been made in China.

China, whose government system is the Communist Party of China / and the People's Liberation Army.  Under this form of government everybody works for the government.  Of course, there are those who fare better than others.  But my concern is for the lowly laborer.  The person that makes your gown.  I do not believe that most Americans are aware of the conditions that they labor under or the wages that they are paid.  Which is the primary reason the costs are so low.  If these gowns were made here, state side, at minimum wage (with benefits) we could expect them to cost 10x as much.  When I learned the long hours and low wages that were paid to these humans I became overwhelmed to think that Americans are afforded luxury on the backs of people who are made slaves.

Did you know that in some worker work all day for lunch? In some factories the people live in barracks outside the factory so they do not have to "waste time going home". Americans would never submit to these conditions or way of living. The Chinese employees are accustomed to working six or seven days a week at many plants in China. They typically live dormitory-style, several people to an apartment. Leaving work in time to get home for family dinner is not part of their routine. (One Chinese worker explains that she only gets to see her child once a year, when she travels from the factory to her home town.) The company attempts to bring some approximation of these labor standards to the U.S., but the Americans, many of whom had previously been members of the United Auto Workers union, begin to complain about their working conditions. I have to believe that people do not know and therefore they behave as they do. I could not believe that they are, quite simply, so insensitive. But I am sure there are those that are. That is deeply saddening. Now there is much talk to move the production to India. This does not cause me to jump for joy. There are also squallor conditions that people work under in India. There is are several documentaries on the subject if you care to learn more.

So the next time you think to complain that the cost of the gown is to high: I beg of you to remember these people who suffer in abject poverty, or the women in this country who have very small profit margins so that you may have luxury affordably.  Every discount you receive is at someone else's cost.

What is The Arras Coins Meaning And Tradition?

The Hispanic tradition of gifting the arras coin set comes with 13 gold coins.  This given to the bride during the wedding ceremony by her groom.  This gift symbolizes the grooms willingness to support and trust his bride.  The brides acceptance symbolizes her willingness to trust her husband and be a prudent wife.

Some believe this is representative of the 12 Apostles and Christ.  Some believe it represents the lunar calendar of twelve months plus the honeymoon, totaling the thirteen.  It's has also been said that the thirteen coins represent thirteen characteristics:  Caring, Commitment, Cooperation, Harmony Happiness, Joy, Love, Nurturing, Peace, Respect, and Trust.  Which ever belief one adheres to the tradition is a beautiful part of the Hispanic wedding ceremony.

Godparents or Padrinos are the ones who make the purchase of the Arras set on behalf of the groom.  This symbolizes that the Padrinos have shared their wealth of knowledge with the groom and bride before the wedding in regards to life and marriage.

The coins set typically comes in small decorative box containing thirteen coins.  It is presented to the priest during the wedding ceremony by the Padrinos.  The priest will bless the coins and then give them to the groom.  The groom pours the box of coins into the brides cupped hands.  After the bride has accepted them she pours them back into the box.  The bride, occasionally, hands the box back to the Padrino to hold until after the ceremony.

Of course, as with all traditions, there come variations.  Regardless of which belief the couples adhere to the underlying sentiment of the Arras Coin Set is another of the many beautiful Hispanic traditions.

You can purchase Arras Coin sets from Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom in the store or at our E-tail store.Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom E-tail Store

10 Things You May Not Know About Gown Shopping

1. Undergarments can and will drastically change the look of a dress. You already know that wearing a strapless bra or a regular one with clear straps is non-negotiable. Even so, I’d recommend getting your measurements taken before you start this process, especially if you've lost weight recently. When trying on the winning dress for the very first time, your bust may look off. The problem: Undergarments one cup size too small and or inches too big around the waist will not give the right look. Be armed with your correct size, try on the dress again—it's amazing what a difference a few inches can make.
2. Wear just enough makeup to feel pretty—don't go overboard. Being surrounded by a billowing sea of white fabric makes you hyper-aware of your appearance. Under-eye circles that were barely noticeable before will look stark. Pale pink lipstick is drowned out by fluorescent lighting. You don't have to get dolled up for your consultant; apply just enough so that you feel presentable. But whatever you do, DO NOT apply self-tanner in the days leading up to your appointment, it will permanently damage the dresses. Also wear your hair the way you've planned it for the wedding.
3. Consultants don't want you to "yes" them to death. We can't assist you properly if you don't tell us how you really feel. "It's beautiful," she may murmur, after stepping into each dress or pulling it over your head. Unaware that you was saying this for Each And Every Gown, we may call you out on it: "I'm not the designer; you won't hurt my feelings." The "nos" will help you get to the final "yes." Also consultants will rarely outright tell you to take something off, so if or when they do, you know they were being truthful. We may also use the words "we can do better," you'll know. It's most helpful if you can be specific as to what it is you do and or don't like about each dress. This can lead them to bringing you THE dress.

4. Do "the aisle test" to make sure the gown looks good from every angle. Before making your final decision, we will help you into the top contender one last time, veil and all, have you walk around the pedestal and or sofa or walk to meet my a loved one at the front entrance. Walking towards them and seeing a stunned reaction solidifies how much you love the dress. Once you find it: go ahead, sit, shimmy, and even twirl in the gowns while trying them on—if it's the right one, you should feel as if you never want to take it off.
5. Trying on wedding gowns is physically and emotionally exhausting. Wedding gowns can be very heavy and getting in and out of them is a workout in itself; you will find yourself ravenous and in need of a good nap afterwards! Up until that point, don't make major planning decisions (photographer, DJ), but when you see how I look in YOUR dress, it will be as if all that had gone before was just a fuzzy dream that suddenly everything becomes crystal-clear. Not the weepy type? don't be mortified if or when tears stream down your cheeks. On the other hand, a bride-to-be friend of mine who sniffles at commercials was mystified by how detached she was to the gown she bought. That's the beauty of wedding planning—no two brides will ever have the same exact experience.

 6. Make Mom love you forever by trying on a dress she recommends, even if you hate it. If Mom has been looking forward to this moment ever since you played dress-up as a little girl, oblige her just this one time and try on one of her recommendations. It's a win-win: Either she'll see that you were right about lace looking all kinds of wrong on you, or you may shock yourself by purchasing one of her picks. Also, be open to suggestions by the consultant. We can not count the number of girls who fell in love with the dress that they hated on the hanger once they put it on!

 7. Ask if there are any discounts they can offer you. We offer discounts if you purchase bridesmaid or mother of the bride/groom dresses there as well. At trunk shows, which feature an entire collection from a specific designer, brides can get a percentage off (usually 10-15), for buying a gown that same day. If you're serious about a dress and can't make the show, try it on beforehand and see if they'll grant it to you at the lower price anyway.

 8. You’ll have to sign on the dotted line for even the smallest details. In order to buy a dress, you'll have to commit to a certain size ahead of time, and they're teeny-tiny compared to regular clothing sizes (a bridal size 6 is equivalent to a size 2 in "normal" clothes). Be prepared to expected that. Don't be surprised to learn you may have to sign off on the height of the heels you will be wearing on the day of the wedding (this would affect your alterations). If you're planning on customizing your gown by adding sleeves, embellishments, or dropping/raising the waist, be prepared to answer very specific questions about that as well. Do not feel offended at anytime during the process when a seamstress or consultant asks you about your cycle or weight fluctuations. They are only trying to do what they need to make you look perfect on your wedding day.

 9. Repeat after me: You are not a failure if you have to try on more than 10 gowns before finding The Gown. Shopping can be a scene out of a romantic comedy or a nightmare: The excitement in the bridal salon is palpable, you're swilling champagne, everyone coos over how stunning you are, and you wish you could bottle how giddy you feel. What movies don't show you is how despondent it can feel if it takes four, or five, or six visits before you find anything that even remotely feels like you. No one tells you that you may even leave some salons crying due to how they work with their clients. Everyone from my doctor to my neighbors got a kick when "the bridal professional couldn't even find a dress." You may find it on the first dress and you may not, but you will find it!

 10. Do it once, do it fabulous. We may repeat this mantra to me throughout my appointment, and it's stuck in my head ever since. You're (hopefully) only going to shop for a wedding gown once in your life—drown out everyone else's opinion and you'll hear a silent little voice tell you which one you should choose. If you are feeling uncertain I will remind you that I am the dress doctor and you should go home, take two aspirin and call me in the morning. When you go to bed be thinking about the gowns you loved when you go to sleep: and your mind will do the work while you sleep. When you wake up your mind will have done the work and sorted things out for you. THE dress will be THE one you first think of when you wake up in the morning. Then, when you pick it, lie to everyone except a handful of people you can trust not to spill the secret.

Being Proactive for Prom

When it comes to prom dresses, not all are created equal. Which is why we love trunk shows and all the perks they offer. Never been to a trunk show? A trunk show is an opportunity for viewing a larger portion of the selected designer’s gowns a store might otherwise not carry. Usually only a few days long, trunk shows offer the chance to order straight-off-the-runway styles.
Just in time for Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom's 2019 (which will start in December of 2018)  trunk shows, we have listed the top 5 Reasons to Attend a Prom Trunk Show.
1) To see the more of the new collection.
At a prom trunk show, customers get to see more of a collection than a store typically has in stock. In addition to our designer’s current in store inventory, there are numerous gowns that may not have been selected for purchase in our shop due to modesty level, fragility of fabric or any other number of reasons.

2) To get the cream of the crop.

Remember:  At Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom we promise not to sell the same dress to another girl from your school.  That means the sooner you shop the greater your selection will be.
3) To add special touches to your prom look.
While it can be hectic at a Trunk Show, the increased staff is here to help you put the whole look together. Take their advice on styles to try.

4) To shop during extended hours.

We are open extended hours for trunk shows
to make it more convenient for everyone including select Sunday hours.
5) To receive perks.
Shoppers will receive a Swag Bag while supplies last just for stopping in during the prom trunk show PLUS an entry for a grand prize!
6) To score a discount.
Trunk shows and flash sales are the best time to save when purchasing your prom gown. Typically you will find that at trunk shows, a bonus is given when you buy the gown of your dreams. In the past it was free jewelry or shoes but we aren’t yet sure what the 2019 offer will be.
7) To make sure there is plenty of time to get the right size and color.
At Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom we work hard to make sure that you get exactly the dress that you want, that it is the right size and fits perfectly.  Please keep in mind that those who are tall (over 5'7") may need to special order their gown with extra length.  Those who are full figured are best served by shopping early so that we can assure that you get the size you need in the gown & color that you want in plenty of time for Prom!

8) To beat the rush.

Spring arrives quickly and schedules become overly full and we see so many struggling to 'fit in' buying their prom gown.  Don't get caught having to settle because of time or product limitations.  By shopping early you are guaranteed to get the gown you want without the stress of last minute shopping.

9
) Ask for it as a Christmas Present.
If your budget is limited you can ask parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles ect. to give you the money you need to buy the dress as a Christmas present.

10) Mom & Dad:  Put a bow on it!

Senior year is an extremely busy year that is filled with many financial obligations.  If you shop early for that prom gown you can put a bow on it and put it under the tree for Christmas.
Bella Sposa Bridal & Prom’s trunk show tip sheet:
  • When attending a trunk show, come with an open mind and be willing to try on gowns you may not like on the hanger.
  • Bring only the person whose opinion you trust the most. Do not bring a big entourage, as it will make your experience more confusing for you and other shoppers.
  • Have mom, dad, grandma or whoever is paying for the dress available for either payment via credit card by phone or bring them along.
  • Come ready to make a decision, because the store bonus or discount will just be available during the trunk show plus when the designer sells out of a style, no more are produced.
  • Most importantly, have fun!

Top Ten Colors for 2018!

There are ten fashionable colors composing the primary Fall / Winter 2018/2019 collections. See them on our facebook page, watch for tips on how to wear them when you come back from the holidays. Warm autumn  tones alternate with vibrant and strong hues much loved by millennials.

  • Whisky brown or Bronze: a soft warm hue, like the liquor.  Its remind us of wood’s veining.
  • Cherry red: a warm rich color, ideal to enhance velvet, tulle and satin. Ideal for elegant, retro-feel looks. Definitely a stand out color.

  • Slate Blue: the color of romance. A color that evokes trust, and the warmth. Perfect for all girls skin tones.
  • Dusty Rose or Mauves: still one of the favorite hues with all designers. Exuberant when worn from head to toe, or as a creative detail.

  • Lavender shades: also “lilac” "Victorian Lilac", it's a lovely pastel that, unlike pink or baby blue can add character to a statement or intricate outfit.
  • From Orange to Coral: Fall’s symbolic hues stand out with all sunny and brilliant effect. Dare to wear an orange and fight the dropping temperatures.
  • Golds & Soft Yellow: Were readily available at market for Spring 2019.

  • Green, from Emerald to Hunter: warm, earthy and subdued, similar to military green but with golden undertones.
  • Grays: from Platinum to Charcoal: it’s the new black, perfect from am to pm, for a bridesmaid or a cocktail dress.
  • Silver: be it shiny and sequined with a mirrored effects. On elegant metallic sequins or beadwork. Silver dresses can be bold or more subtle in chiffons.
